| Between two medical towers at USC Health Sciences Campus stands a granite water feature that stands approximately 9 ft. tall by 30 ft. wide. Each wall is crafted of five vertical granite panels of varying widths and textures. The panels are ordered in stepped-fashion to systematically decrease in both thickness, and in width, until both walls meet at a 90º angle. This corner projects into the corridor that runs between the two buildings, and marks the central point of the feature. The outermost panels of both walls have a smooth honed finish, creating a subtle water pattern. As one walks past the wall in either direction toward the center point of the wall, the granite panels gradually exhibit a more obvious rippling effect. Waves of rippling water are created as the water flows over various ridges cut into the surfaces of the granite. Spacing between the ridges on each panel is closer than the one that it is adjacent to, gradually increasing in frequency, toward the central corner of the wall. Architect: RBB Architects |
